Early morning challenge: Can I become a morning person in one week?
Anyone that knows me will tell you that I’m not a morning person, not in the slightest. I hate getting up. Every morning I feel like I could sleep at least an hour longer, or more, and if left without my alarm I could easily sleep the whole day away. It’s something I have long been frustrated by, but am yet to find a solution to.
I have always been envious of ‘morning people’ those who seem to be able to jump out of bed at 6am with ease, ready to start the day. I feel like I have to drag myself out of bed even at 8am (or if I’m being honest closer to 9) most days and it takes me a good hour to even feel like I’m vaguely awake! How do they do it I ask? Why can’t I be like that?
If at first you don’t succeed…
I’ve tried the classic tricks, setting my alarm 10 minutes earlier each day, I just snooze an extra 10 minutes, not so successful. An alarm clock that wakes you up with light, I just pull the covers over my head. Going to bed earlier and reading before bed, I just sleep longer. Nothing seems to work. Now this is probably also attributed to a lack of willpower, I know that, but I still wonder, how can this be SO difficult for me, when others seem to do it with ease? Are certain people really ‘morning’ types, and others just aren’t? Or is it something that you can train yourself to do?
Well I want to find out!
Do early mornings equal success?
Being a morning person has long been associated with success. You see countless articles about the ‘secrets to success’ and those who get up at 5am to get a head start on the day. People who have gotten an entire days worth of work done before I’ve even hit the 3rd snooze on my alarm. Part of me feels like this is just rubbish, that everyone is different and we should all just listen to our internal body clocks about what time of the day we work best. Part of me is hugely jealous and desperately wants to be part of this early morning super club.
The Challenge
So with that in mind I have decided to set myself a challenge, to get up by 6.30 am every day for a working week (I’m not crazy enough to suggest getting up that early on a weekend!), starting Monday! I figure that by blabbing about it on social media there is less chance of me backing out and hitting that snooze button (less chance… but not no chance!). I’ll be documenting my week in my insta stories and will share the results of the challenge with you in my next blog post.
I’m hoping at the end of it I’ll be a bonafide lark, or at least be able to get up before 8am most days… Here’s hoping!
